GOLF COURSEILOILO GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Iloilo Golf & Country Club, formerly known as Sta. Barbara Golf Course, is the oldest golf course in the Philippines, laid out in Santa Barbara, Iloilo by Scottish engineers who came to build the Panay railway. Its mature, tree-lined 18-hole layout rewards accurate ball striking over sheer length, and more than a century of history gives every round a character that no newer course can match.

Beyond the golfWhat to Enjoy in Iloilo
You play on three consecutive days, leaving the afternoon you land, the evenings and your last morning. Iloilo rewards every one of them: it has the best-preserved heritage architecture in the region and, by fairly common consent, the best food in the Philippines.
-
La Paz batchoy, at its source
A noodle soup of pork broth, chicharrón, liver and a raw egg stirred through at the table — invented in the La Paz public market and eaten here at any hour of the day. Ilonggos will argue at length about which stall does it properly. The argument is part of it.
-
Calle Real after dark
The old commercial spine of the city, lined with 1920s and 1930s buildings in beaux-arts and art deco, restored and now a protected heritage zone. Walkable end to end in an evening.
-
Miagao Church
The fortress church of Santo Tomás de Villanueva, finished in 1797 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, with a coconut palm carved across its façade. About forty kilometres south-west of the city and worth the drive.
-
The Esplanade, and Dinagyang in January
The Iloilo River Esplanade runs for kilometres along the water and is where the city walks in the evening. In late January the streets belong to Dinagyang instead — one of the largest festivals in the Philippines.
